As far back as I can remember, I've always gotten a new Easter dress complete with gloves, hat and purse (although as I got older it evolved into an Easter "outfit") and we went to a sunrise service. The church where I spent most of my school-aged years has an Easter sunrise service in the parking lot. In Florida, you don't expect really cold weather by the time Easter rolls around but still every year, it would be freezing outside for the sunrise service and we would have to use paper towels to wipe the condensation from the folding chairs before sitting.
We enjoyed a meaningful worship service filled with scripture and song (typically at least one of those songs was sung by me!) while watching the beautiful Florida sunrise. Immediately following the service, everyone able-bodied would carry their folding chair (and the chairs of those who were not able-bodied) into the Fellowship Hall to enjoy a pancake breakfast cooked by the United Methodist Men of our church.
Later in the day my entire family (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins) would get together for Easter dinner. It was always a great afternoon filled with familiar food and lots of laughs.
Now that I'm married, have a daughter and my own little family, those traditions are no more. Our new church doesn't do a sunrise service or a pancake breakfast, and I don't think they do an Easter egg hunt. I've loved those traditions and will forever cherish the memories but now it's time to create new traditions.
What my husband and I do in regards to holidays is alternate the years with each family. For example, last year we spent each holiday with my family; this year is the year for his family. Except for Christmas; that is always at our house with both families and it's non-negotiable.
I'd like to come up with some sort of constant for our little family's Easter tradition, despite the alternating between extended families for the "big" celebrating part. Do we have an Easter egg hunt in our house with just the three of us and then have a pancake breakfast before going to church? That sounds like fun to me!
What are your family's Easter traditions? What were the traditions of your family growing up and how have they evolved as you've started your own family?

We always do an egg hunt with the kids here at the house. And I cook a big dinner. We don't have anyone to share the day with so it's no big deal.
ReplyDeleteNow, you know the "big dinner" idea isn't an option for me. :) I like the egg hunt at home idea. What do you make for dinner? Is there such a thing as "traditional" Easter food?
